IELTS Sample Papers with Answers: A Complete Practice Guide

Every strong IELTS score starts with the same habit: practising on real exam-style material before test day. This guide explains how to use IELTS sample papers properly, which format suits you, and where to find reliable practice PDFs. At the end you can download everything in one go.

Why IELTS Sample Papers Matter More in 2026

IELTS is not just an English test. It is a timed test of reading speed, listening focus, writing structure and spoken fluency. Sample papers train all four.

The cost of a retake is also higher than it used to be. IDP IELTS India raised the fee from ₹18,000 to ₹19,000 for both Academic and General Training from April 1, 2026. Preparing well the first time is now a smarter financial decision as well as an academic one. gradright

IELTS Previous Year Question Papers: What Is Actually Available

Many students search for IELTS previous year question papers, but the exam does not work like a board exam. Official IELTS papers are not released after each test sitting. The closest thing to real past papers are the Cambridge IELTS practice books, which are written by the exam makers and follow the live test format. The PDFs in this guide are built around that approach, so you practise on authentic material instead of guesswork.

Know Your Test Format Before You Practise

Choose your sample papers according to the version you will sit.

IELTS Academic is for university admission abroad. Reading uses academic passages, and Writing Task 1 asks you to describe visual information such as a graph, chart, table or diagram.

IELTS General Training is for migration, work experience and training programmes. Reading uses everyday and workplace texts, and Writing Task 1 is a letter.

Computer or paper. On the computer-delivered test, Listening, Reading and Writing are on screen, while Speaking stays live with an examiner. The computer version takes 2 hours 45 minutes in total, and there is also a Writing on Paper option. Practise in the format you have booked, because typing speed and screen reading are skills too. britishcouncilbritishcouncil

How to Use a Sample Paper in Four Steps

    1. Attempt one section under strict timing. Listening runs about 30 minutes, Reading 60 minutes and Writing 60 minutes, with Speaking taking 11 to 14 minutes. Do not pause the clock.

    1. Check your answers honestly. Mark every wrong answer and note why it was wrong: spelling, a missed keyword, a distractor or a time problem.

    1. Calculate your band estimate. Convert your raw score using the official band conversion table. Track it in a notebook or sheet after every test.

    1. Repeat on a weakness plan. If Reading is your lowest module, give it extra papers that week instead of rotating evenly.

IELTS Idioms for Speaking

Speaking is scored on fluency, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. Natural idiomatic language can lift your vocabulary range when it is used lightly and accurately. This PDF groups useful expressions about annoyance, happiness and everyday feelings, each with its meaning and a model Speaking Part 1 style response. It also reminds you to adjust the verb tense when you use an idiom with an irregular verb.

Use two or three idioms per practice session, not ten. Overuse sounds rehearsed and can hurt your fluency score.

Build Your English Base with Two Bonus PDFs

If your band score is stuck at 5.5 or 6, the problem is often basic grammar and spoken accuracy, not exam strategy. These two worksheets help.

Advance Learner Study Pack. It covers dress-related vocabulary, present perfect versus past simple, prepositions, short answers, contractions, formal and informal conversation, phrasal verbs, idioms and polite phone English. These are the building blocks behind clear Speaking answers and accurate Writing.

A 4-Week Practice Plan

Week 1: Take one full diagnostic test and note your weakest module.
Week 2: Work on that module daily and use the idiom PDF for Speaking.
Week 3: Take one full timed test and review every mistake in writing.
Week 4: Repeat a full test under real conditions, then rest the day before your exam.

Know the Test Day Facts

Results arrive faster on computer. Computer-delivered results come within 1 to 5 days, often in as little as 2 days, compared with 13 days for paper-based tests. aeccglobal

If one module lets you down, there is a second chance without repeating everything. The One Skill Retake lets computer-based test takers retake a single module within 60 days of the original test. Check that your target university or immigration body accepts it before booking, because acceptance varies by organisation. aeccglobal

Common Mistakes to Avoid

    • Reading answer keys before attempting a section

    • Practising without a timer

    • Ignoring Speaking until the last week

    • Using only Academic papers for a General Training test, or the reverse

    • Memorising model essays instead of learning structure
