Is a Pen- Paper Based Test Better or a Computer Based Test Better?

The question paper of both the pen-paper based and computer based remains the same. Hence, it totally depends on whatever one is comfortable with. The added benefit of a computer based test is that it has many availabilities throughout the month and the test results are delivered faster as compared to a pen and paper based test.


What Are the Different Sections in an IELTS Examination?

When Does the Speaking Test Take Place?

The speaking test is held on a different day unlike the listening, reading and writing test which is conducted on the same day. You will be informed via mail as to when the speaking test will be conducted, so always be alert.

If I Opt for the Computer Based Test Then Can I Avoid the Speaking Test Which Takes Place With a Trained and Certified Examiner?

Whether you go for the pen-paper based test or computer based test, the speaking test will be the same. You have to go for an interview with a trained and certified trainer which lasts up to 11 to 15 minutes.

What Questions to Expect in the Speaking Section?

Part 1 of the speaking section consists of an introduction session.  Part 2 consists of a cue card where you are given one minute to prepare for a given topic and two minutes to speak on the topic without stopping. Part 3 consists of a two way discussion between the trainer and the examinee, broadly linked to the topic introduced in Part 2.

What Questions to Expect in the Listening Section?

There are 40 questions in total in the listening section. In part 1 you will listen to a conversation between two speakers. In part 2 you will listen to an audio of a single speaker on a non- academic situation. In part 3 you will listen to a conversation with up to four speakers based on academic topics or course related situations. In part 4 you will listen to a university style lecture or talk. All the questions asked will be based on the audio recording you will listen to.

What Questions to Expect in the Reading Section?

There will be 40 questions in total in the reading section. You will be given three comprehensions  to go through in an hour.

What Questions to Expect in the Writing Section?

There are two writing tasks in the writing section. In case of IELTS academic for writing task 1 you will have a diagram, chart or graph which the examinee has to describe, analyse and compare. In case of IELTS general  for writing task 1 the examinee is given a letter writing task. However, the writing task 2 remains the same for both academic and general. In writing task 2 you are given a topic to write upon which should be at least 250 words.
